A Work by Capogrossi at the Jahan-Nama Museum

Hour 11:35 04 Feb 26
Giuseppe Capogrossi (Italian painter), who lived from 1900 to 1972, initially focused on figurative painting and later turned to abstract art in 1950.

His paintings are generally composed of hieroglyph-like signs (hieroglyphs are characters formed by drawing images of animals and objects). In this untitled work, created in 1961 using the oil-on-canvas technique, he likewise employed hieroglyph-like signs in the composition.Through the use of positive and negative space, he created movement and rhythm in the work. Additionally, by combining black and white surfaces, he generated visual texture. The integration of horizontal and vertical lines produces a sense of stability and solidity, while also establishing a balanced visual and aesthetic relationship with other surfaces. By employing contrast, harmony, and the combination of all hieroglyph-like forms, an asymmetrical balance has been achieved. From the perspective of the principles of visual arts and color theory, the square form corresponds to the color red. In hieroglyphic writing, the square was used to represent the earth. The red color patches tending toward a square form in this work may therefore allude to this concept. Overall, line has been used to visualize forms, convey emotions, create spatial depth, and generate pattern and texture.
