One of the non- indigenous, ornamental, and evergreen tree species found in the historic Niavaran Garden is the Himalayan cedar, also known as the sacred cedar. This tree is scattered throughout various parts of the garden's green spaces. It is native to the western Himalayas, eastern Afghanistan, northern Pakistan, and northern India, and is commonly referred to as Himalayan cedar. In Iran, it is planted in regions such as Tehran, Karaj, and the northern areas of the country.Scientific Name and Classification: The Himalayan cedar tree is scientifically known as Cedrus deodara and its English name is Himalayan Cedar. It belongs to the family Pinaceae and is classified among the pine trees. Its branches grow in layered or tiered arrangements, and it's very beautiful and orderly form has made it widely used in urban landscaping, parks, gardens, villas, and city squares.Botanical Characteristics: Cedrus deodara is a large, conical, and evergreen tree, typically growing between 25 to 45 meters in height. Its crown diameter ranges from 8 to 12 meters. The tree features horizontal, erect branches that droop when young but become more rigid and upright with age. The bark of young trees is gray and smooth, while mature trees have brown, deeply furrowed bark. The leaves are needle-shaped, dense, stiff, and range in color from bright green to bluish-green, with a length of approximately 2.5 to 5 Centimeters. The cones of this tree appear upright and cylindrical on the branches. They measure between 7 to 12.5 centimeters in length and about 6.5 centimeters in width. It takes roughly two years for the cones to mature fully. The tree also produces small, inconspicuous flowers.Environmental Requirements and Care Conditions: Cedrus deodara requires moderate watering and well-drained soil for optimal growth. It can grow in both acidic and alkaline soils and is classified as a sun-loving plant, thriving well under full sunlight to partial shade conditions.Propagation Methods: Propagation of Cedrus deodara is possible through seeds, cuttings, and grafting. The appropriate method is selected based on climatic conditions and planting goals.Research and Compilation: Masoumeh Rezvanfar MS in Natural Resources Engineering
